It’s Energy Saving Week  (19th – 25th October)  to look at how we can go green and cut our domestic carbon footprint.

Saturday came a double glazing guy to quote for windows for Lynton Gardens: cost £4,146 for 5 PVCu Windows. How much saving should I make for the investment to pay for itself? If 5 windows save 10% energy = £100 per year saving maxi. If I overpay my mortgage by £4,146 I will save £239 per year in mortgage repayment.
I love my old wooden windows, don't like PVCu. I can't get motivated to order new windows.

Sunday I have signed-up to 10:10
uniting everyone around immediate, effective and achievable action, 10:10 enables us all to make a meaningful difference.

Monday I had a meeting with the Headmistress of our school who isn't keen on becoming the 25th
(and last?) school to join the Eco-school project in Harrogate because the staff is busy working towards the investor in people award, no time spare to invest on saving the planet and its people, but at least they will be able to display the the investor in people plaque and use the investor in people logo on stationery and recruitment advertisements.

Tuesday I was looking to replace my old fridge/freezer because according to the Energy Saving Trust I would save up to £36 and 140 kilogrammes of CO2 a year.  What I don't understand is that some of the  Fridge/freezers they recommend are using up to 576.0 kWh/year (I am sure this is more that what my fridge/freezer uses, how can I know?) I wonder as well how much Kg of CO2 is required for the production of a new fridge. For each loaf of bread it's 1.3 kg CO2.

Wednesday I have received the DVD of The Age of Stupid and I hope you will join me to watch it on the 30th October in Henshaws.

Thursday, What will I do to end the Energy saving week? Make the right decisions in the green investment I wish to do?

Friday, i have decided not to fly to my cousine's birthday near Paris and to spend Noël here at home. i have contributed to more than  half a tonne of CO2 by flying to France last year. By flying less I will cut my CO2 by more than the 10% I pledge for the year. I will keep my promess. I can take the train. I suggest you look at your footprint too.
I have booked my son Louis with James and Charles to St John Fisher Sportscamps Monday 26th October.

The camps include over 30 different sports and games, led by enthusiastic and committed sports leaders.

All the camps run from 8.30 am to 4 pm every school holiday with excellent indoor and outdoor facilities.

If you would like your child (or your children) to learn some French before or/and after a day of sport I can be your childminder.

You drop your child at time convenient for you at my house before 8am /
or at 8:30 at St John Fisher Sportscamps and the fun carries on at my house until you arrive.
I will make it very easy for you and I help you in the booking process.

If you book before Monday 19th October, contact me and you will receive £5 discount for
St John Fisher Sportscamps

You can see here a photo of Louis demonstrating his Cricket talents to fellow cricket player (W. wears the T-shirt). In the background 2 younger children are painting and cutting relentlessly. On that day a lot of arts was produced including cardboard light-sabers for each boy.

Harrogate Borough Council has started a new community project, to reduce CO2 emissions. By helping each other along a low carbon journey, we hope that you will be able to make at least a ten percent cut in your carbon footprint.

We are now looking for people like you who could volunteer as part of this project.

As a volunteer you would need to:

· Enjoy the idea of taking a personal challenge to be more environmentally conscious

· Gather together a team of 5-10 people at work, or within your club, society or school.

· Act as your team's low carbon guide, by being the main contact with the council's Environment Project Officers.

As a volunteer you can expect:

· Relevant training in two evening sessions

· A resources pack for you and every member of your team

Everyone taking part will get a low carbon passport, containing step-by-step instructions on reducing energy use and waste, along with a pack of free green goodies. We hope it will be a sociable, easy to follow process, that will result in real carbon cuts.

If you would like to become a low carbon guide, or just want to find out more, please email

John Ward-Campbell or call 01423 556909.

The places where I would like to make a diference are at school, at work and at home.

Les Happy Frogs have a green policy.

We offer Green discount: if you commit to walk to pick up and drop off your child to my place I give you 10% green discount.

We walk to and from school. If the weather is very bad we drive only part of the way. Sometime we cycle to school.

We use local products whenever possible and organic products as often as possible. We try to buy in local shops.
We use some fairtrade products like bananas and coffee.

We try not to waist food.

We use rechargeable batteries and battery charger.

We use ECOVER cleaning products.

We encourage wildlife in the garden

I have a membership to Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth Harrogate.

We recycle as much as possible, all paper, Glass, tins and cans are recycled. Sometime we pick up litter on the Stray or on our route from school to put in our recycling bin.

I would like to see "Harrogate Plastic Bag Free" therefore I refuse free plastic bags in shops unless I really need one.

We use low-energy light bulbs where possible and switch off light when not necessary.

I have installed Cavity wall insulation in Silverfields Road in 2000 and in Lynton Gardens in 2009.

We have monitored our energy usage thank to an Energiy monitor borowed from the library.

We have swiches in place on TV and PC so that when we put the TV ot PC on stand-by, the switch turns all the appliances connected to it off including the Wii (which, without this stays on stand-by)

We don't shop in shop who leave their door open to let the heating out and the cold in.

My green intention for the near future:

Having double glazing or secondary double glazing on my windows where possible. Do you know someone who could help me with this?

Replacing our electric shower

I have regiseter to 10:10 and I have pledged not to fly this year.

Tonight I have been to a Repetition de "An Evening of Elgar" for a concert on saturday 7 November 2009 at The Royal Hall with Margaret McDonald, Mezzo and the Amici Orchestra.

It was beautifull, I have been invited to join in with the singing tonight and to come every week until ... the AUDITION... then, they will tell me if I can stay or not. I would love to stay. The Conductor, Andrew Padmore, is realy good, I beleve one of the best.

If, like me, you want to join Harrogate Choral Society, Rehersals are held on Wednesdays from 7.30 till 9.30 at Christ Church, Harrogate.

World Carfree Day 2009

en de

Every September 22, people from around the world get together in the streets, intersections, and neighbourhood blocks.

Let World Carfree Day be a showcase for just how our cities might look like, feel like, and sound like with less cars.

As the climate heats up, World Carfree Day is the perfect time to take the heat off the planet, and put it on city planners and politicians to give priority to cycling, walking and public transport, instead of to the automobile.

So take the time, browse the links and resources provided, and join in on the celebrations!

World Carfree Day Has Gone Wiki!

Last year, Harrogate joined thousands of towns and cities across Europe to take part in its first ever Car Free Day. Widespread support from all parts of the community resulted in the town’s roads being noticeably quieter at peak times. The Council’s traffic monitoring systems revealed that were over 2,400 less cars on three of the town’s roads for that day.

Join Harrogate Car Free day bike ride through town, starting at Harrogate College (leaving 5.30pm) and ending at St Peter’s Church. All ages welcomed as stewards will be available. Route is Rayleigh Road, Hamilton Avenue, Warwick, Crescent, St. James Drive, Stray Rein, South Park Road, Victoria Avenue, Station Parade, West Park, Prospect Crescent, ending at St. Peter’s Church.

Over 90 people participated in last years and we hoping for more this year!

Read on to find out about this year’s event including how to register for FREE Bike hire and FREE Bus tickets........

As I am a green Childminder I walk or cycle to St Robets School every day with the children and I offer 10% discount to families who don't use a car. Not costing the Earth. On Carfree Day I will cycle to Knaresborough where I now work during school hours.
